Grandchildren

By Bob Marconi

Kids.

At 66 it's hard to believe I once was one! Now I'm growed up - I think - and have a grown daughter.

These days my daughter is married and I have a grandson, Preston. Who, by the way, on a recent birthday trip to Disneyland became a 'Jedi' knight. It's great to know I am now protected by the force!

Preston was one of two boys, twins, who decided to come into this world early. Unfortunately his brother died within several days of their births. Losing a child is never easy but I always wonder what was the purpose of such a short lived life. I believe every life has some purpose.

This past December saw Preston's 11th birthday and for this he received a trip to Disneyland, where he earned the Jedi title. I was lucky enough to accompany them to Disneyland to help celebrate. In 2009 he also appeared in a school production of 'Willie Wonka...'.

Thanks to Preston's dad and mom, he is turning out to be a well rounded boy. The more well rounded he is, the better off will be his life as he moves forward.

When my brother and I were growing up, we were lucky enough to have had one living grandparent, my mom's dad. Many times at the dinner table he would sit quietly while mom scolded us for some infraction or other. Every so often he would interrupt the scolding to tell us of a time when, during mom's childhood, she had done the same thing we were being lectured on. Funny how she managed to always interrupt him and end the story - as well as our scolding!

My fondest wish has always been that I could give every child a grandparent. I believe they are so important to a child's upbringing. If you are a grandparent try always to be there for your grandchild. They will remember what you teach them, if only by example.

Grand kids are great. We now live in Washington State. One grandchild is in Montana and the others now live in Florida.

Wish we could spend more time with them.

Thanks for sharing this, Bob. I am a grandmother, too, but my childhood memories are strong. We always had a grandmother living at home. Alas, I have to travel across the ocean to visit my grandchildren, so I am saving my pennies. . .I have a squidoo lens on grandparenting from afar:
