School

By Bob Marconi

I pretty much liked my schools. I was born in a small PA town and for the 1st through 8th grades I went to a catholic school. Of course I probably had an edge as one of my teachers was Sister V., a nun who just happened to be my godmother. And two other lay teachers in the school were also relatives on my father's side. And yes, my brother and I were altar boys (though I'm not sure how much good that did us).

Now Sister V. was not your typical nun. Oh she could discipline with the best of them and when necessary did. That ruler smarted! The difference was this nun had a sense of humor and enjoyed pranks. Especially when played against a priest and she could 'direct' the annoyance toward us. One of her favorite tricks was to gather a group of around her when Father G. was coming and hit him with a basketball, then duck behind us. Guess who got the 'comeuppance'? She was a joy.

One of the things I thought about in later years, was the amount of knowledge we did not receive in those 8 years. Subjects in history that were ignored. It wasn't until I started high school in California that I knew about the Japanese being sent to prison camps during the war or the struggles of our minority communities or the fact there were other religions out there.

One hopes that things are constantly improving in our schools so that new generations are given a balanced view of the world out there. We all need to have a better understanding of each other and our struggles and triumphs if we are to make this a better world. We should not attempt to rewrite history but report it as it happened. Then rewrite the future so as to not repeat our failings. Sadly, I don't see that happening today. To often we just seem to repeat our failings.

Contributor's Note

School; days - look back on them with some fondness, though perfect they might not have been.
